Mid-Range Grill, Adequate Performance
The Char-Griller 2828 is a low- to medium-priced grill that performs decently and will not cause undue problems over its lifespan. It has 580 square inches of cooking space, along with a 280 inch warming rack, and a side shelf. The cast-iron grates can be raised to add more charcoal, and the charcoal tray is also adjustable.
Charcoal tray is adjustable
You can manually move the charcoal tray to be closer or farther from the racks depending on the temperature you wish to cook at.
580 square inches of cooking space
With 580 square inches of cooking area, the Char-Griller 2828 has plenty of space for most grillers. The warming rack adds an additional 250 square inches to the total surface area. This larger sized grill also makes it easy to cook at two different heat levels, keeping one side on high heat and the other side on a lower heat.
Lift-able, cast iron grates
The cast iron grates are durable but will require cleaning to make sure they don’t rust over time. You will also have to season the grates before using. They lift up so you can add more charcoal; many units in this price range include front-loading doors or sliding charcoal shelves, so the fact that you have to lift the grates in order to put more charcoal in will be a bit of a disappointment for some users.
NOT a smoker
This grill does not work as a great long-term smoker, despite what many users seem to believe when purchasing it. However, it is a good grill for smoking meats for a few hours to achieve a smoked flavor.
A unique feature of the Char-Griller 2828 is that it comes with a warming rack with a total of 250 square inches of surface area. The warming rack is a nice touch that allows you to cook some things fully then keep them warm until everything is ready to be served at once.
Side shelf includes utensil hooks
The wooden side shelf on the Char-Griller 2828 has a nice extra feature in that it includes utensil hooks to hang spatulas, forks, etc. on. This decreases the general clutter that can surround you when grilling, and ensure that your tools don’t get lost. It also includes a condiment basket to add to the organized feel. This is definitely a plus, as many grills that have side shelves or tables don’t have the sort of thoughtful design that helps you keep organized while grilling, especially during a party.
Weak leg caps
Many users report that the leg caps are not very durable and will break within the first few uses, or even during assembly.
There are few identifiable issues with the Char-Griller 2828, and for its price point it would be a good investment for a medium sized family or someone who wants to grill quite a bit of food at a time. While it would be nice if you didn’t have to lift the grates in order to add charcoal, the warming tray is a useful feature and the utensil hooks and condiment tray on the side shelf show an attention to detail that makes the Char-Griller 2828 stand out.
