1500-watt electric kettle has five temperature presets and cordless serving
Like many Hamilton Beach products, the 40996 Programmable electric kettle is affordable, but not “cheap.” It offers 1500 watts of power, a 1.7-liter capacity, and a control panel with 5 presets for easy hot-water preparation. Features like cordless serving and intuitive buttons help make the kettle easy to figure out and use.
1500 watts of power
With 1500 watts, you can heat up one liter of water in about 4 minutes. This is much faster than in a microwave or even on a stovetop. The heating element is inside the corded base, which protects it from fast break down. The kettle is also able to keep hot water warm for up to 60 minutes.
The kettle on this Hamilton Beach is large and can hold up to 7 cups. For most average-sized families, this is an ideal size. Everyone can have at least one cup of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. In terms of food, you can use hot water for instant soup, noodles, mac & cheese, and more.
Control panel w/ 5 presets
As a programmable kettle, the electric kettle has five pre-set temperatures, so you can select specific temperatures. This gives you more precision when it comes to preparing delicate teas (green, white, oolong), which require lower temps. The control panel also includes a countdown timer, programmable clock, and shutoff setting.
Easy to operate
The kettle is pretty easy to operate, considering how many features it has. To adjust the temperature, you use the +/- buttons, and to select one of the presets, you hold down the PROG button until the temperature you want pops up. If you can operate a microwave, you can use this kettle.
If you let water boil too long in a kettle, it can leave a burn-like discoloration on the inside and damage the heating element. It also makes the kettle dangerously hot to the touch. Boil-dry protection, which this Hamilton Beach has, shuts off the kettle when the water boils. This is much safer and convenient than if you had to shut the kettle off manually.
Handling a kettle with a cord can be obnoxious. As a cordless kettle, the Hamilton Beach is in two parts: the kettle body and powered base. The cord is located on the base, so you lift up the kettle for serving, leaving the base and cord behind.
Not super durable
Unfortunately, this kettle isn’t super durable. If you use it a lot, it begins to wear down, and tends to rust. If you boil hot water 2-3 times a day, you might be disappointed by how long this kettle lasts.
The Hamilton Beach 40996 is affordable, and easy to use for a programmable kettle. It has 1500 watts and a 1.7-liter capacity, which is great for families who want a lot of hot water fast. It isn’t the most durable kettle out there, but if you use your kettle about once a day, it should be fine. It also has the added bonus of five presets, so you can set specific temperatures for drinks like delicate teas.
