Very compact portable air conditioner with 8,000 BTU, a self-evaporative system, and eco-friendly refrigerant
The Whynter ARC-08WB is smaller than some other portable air conditioners, so it’s a great choice if you have limited space. It has 8,000 BTUs, so it’s able to cool down larger rooms, too, if necessary. Very little maintenance is required due to a self-evaporative system, and if you’re concerned about energy conservation and global warming, you’ll be happy to know that the unit’s cooling is done with eco-friendly refrigerant.
8,000 BTU ideal for apartments, larger rooms
The 8,0000-BTU Whynter is best suited to apartments or larger rooms around 200-300 square feet. This includes bedrooms, offices, basements, and apartment living rooms. Choose from three modes: air conditioner, fan, or a dehumidifier, which is labeled “Dry.” The dehumidifier mode is able to collect up to 45.6 pints of moisture a day, which is nice for very humid days. You can also choose to just use the fan.
In addition to choosing the unit’s mode, you get an adjustable digital thermostat that goes from 62-88 degrees Fahrenheit. You can select your ideal temperature, and then put it on a timer up to 24 hours so it turns on and off exactly when you want it to. All of the Whynter’s function can also be adjusted by the included remote control.
Rather than emptying out a bucket all the time, the Whynter Portable Air Conditioner gets rid of the accumulated moisture through a self-evaporative system. This system is designed to get rid of most if not at all of the water gathered by the dehumidifier, though the system is not without its flaws. These will be discussed in the “Weaknesses” section of the review.
At only 29 inches tall and 13.7 inches wide, the ARC-08WB is a very compact air conditioner. It’s ideal for really tight spots where there isn’t much floor space, like rooms with a lot of furniture or even work offices away from home.
Uses eco-friendly refrigerant
If you’ve been paying attention, you know that climate change and excess energy consumption is a real concern. If you’re interested in doing your part, you can rest easy knowing that the Whynter uses eco-friendly refrigerant (R410A) and is made from lead-free parts. You’ll not only be helping the earth, you’ll be saving money on your energy bill.
Lots of allergens and bad smells live in the summer air. Pollen and dust are often just the beginning, and it’s important that your cool air also be fresh in order for you to feel comfortable. The Whynter comes with a washable pre-filter that deals with odors and larger particles right away, before the activated carbon filter finishes the job.
Poor window kit
Like all portable air conditioners, the Whynter ARC-08WB needs to be vented to the outside. However, the kit isn’t designed very well and though it says it fits in standard-sized windows, you’ll probably have to make some modifications. This can take up a lot of time and be frustrating.
No removable bucket
Though the self-evaporative drain system says it takes care of all the moisture, you’ll find that you do need to manually drain the unit, especially if you use the dehumidifier a lot. The Whynter doesn’t come with a removable bucket, so in order to drain the water, you’ll have to set up a permanent drain system. Luckily, the unit does allow for this and comes with the necessary parts.
As an air conditioner and dehumidifier, the Whynter ARC-08WB Eco-Friendly portable is a better air conditioner. It comes with a decent amount of power (8,000 BTU) and freshens your air with two filters in addition to cooling. The dehumidifier isn’t bad either, though it does take a little tweaking to get the drainage system to work right. Other than that, the air conditioner uses eco-friendly refrigerant and parts, and fits just about anywhere thanks to its very compact size.
