A quality entry level machine from Janome
The 2212 is the entry-level machine being offered by Janome. They have a reputation for building quality and reliable sewing machines that perform well and last for years. This machine has 12 stitch patterns and a four-step buttonhole. It has a free arm and drop feed which makes it versatile for more than just beginner projects. The Janome 2212 is lightweight and portable this makes it ideal for the beginner or the teacher taking it to a beginner class. This machine is comparable to the Michley LSS-505 in so much as they are basic beginner entry-level machines. However, the Janome is considerably more expensive.
Features
The Janome 2212 comes with 12 preset stitch patterns that are selectable via rotary switch on the front of the sewing machine. It also has a convenient front loading bobbin, a free arm and can sew at speed up to 860 stitches per minute. Additionally it has manual tension control, a drop feed dog which will allow you to stitch a whole variety of materials and snap on presser feet, which come in a variety of types.
Functionality
The Janome 2212 doesn’t really have many fancy stitch patterns aside from the basic zigzag and straight stitch but is perfect for piecing or basic garment constructions. Being an entry-level machine it is mechanical rather than computerizes but that doesn’t make it any harder to use it just makes doing the fundamentals simpler and the reliability greater. There are surprising advanced features built into the Janome despite it being an entry level model such as the drop feed and free arm features. These features will allow the beginner to progress to more challenging projects as their skills advance.
Accessories
The Janome 2212 comes with 3 bobbins, needles, a selection of presser feet such as a blind hem foot, a sliding buttonhole foot, a zipper foot as well as the general purpose foot. There is also a seam ripper and a foot pedal.
Although there is a free bonus value pack, which contains ten Janome bobbins and a pack of Janome size 12 needles. This remains the weakest offering especially when compared against the Singer and Brother standard offerings.
Strengths
Great build quality
The Janome 2212 is a quality built mechanical machine that is very reliable and although lightweight is still robust and has a quality feel about it.
Easy to operate
The Janome is easy to operate and learn how to use as it is designed with beginners in mind.
Weaknesses
Limited accessories
The supply of accessories that come as standard are very limited and if you do not get a special offer that brings with it the value pack then you can run out of required items very soon.
Overall Verdict
The Janome is a very good easy to use sewing machine designed for the beginner and pitched at the entry-level end of the market. It does though have some advanced features so the beginner will not outgrow the machine that quickly.
